Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  activist, humanitarian, and a major leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement.  He fought for equality for African Americans, the economically disadvantaged and victims of injustice through peaceful protest. Due to his influence on the African American civil rights movement, Martin Luther King Day became  a federal holiday held on the third Monday of January. It celebrates the life and achievements of Martin Luther King Jr.
